Why You Should Plan That Second Vacation

2013-05-05 06.34.40

Well it’s March.  The month when almost every human living in the Northeast starts to go a little stir-crazy.  A majority of your conversations are consumed with weather bashing talk.

It’s also the time of year that many of us flee to warmer parts of the country.  I was quick to jump on that band wagon in February, and planned a last minute getaway with my girlfriends to Puerto Rico.  It was much needed…but it wasn’t enough.

Andy and I have decided to book another tropical getaway for the month of May!  While I am so excited, I couldn’t help but feel a slight pang of guilt as the idea started becoming more concrete.

Why?

I’ve thought a lot about this.  And maybe this is just me justifying my need for a second vacation, but I hope it’s more thought-provoking than that.

We grow up with the American Dream as the goal.  The conventional path of working hard and saving money to afford the house, a couple of cars, and yes start a family.  That is the responsible thing to do…that’s what we’re supposed to do right?  Vacations come once a year, if we’re lucky.

But does it have to be this way?  Well I hope not.  Soon I’ll be turning the corner on my late twenties.  Am I getting too old to be spending my paychecks on seeing the world?  God, I really hope not.

Here are my thoughts.  People will spend their money in different ways.  Some may save to have a fairy tale wedding or to buy their dream house.  There’s nothing wrong with that…whatever makes you tick.  All I know is that there is a huge world out there for us to see.  One lyric that has stuck with me recently is from a Lord Huron song, “What good is living the life you’ve been given if all you do is stand in one place?”

Traveling to new places makes you richer.  Whether it’s a U.S. city you’ve never been to, a Caribbean Island, or a far away exotic destination…there is always something  beautiful to gain when traveling.  New experiences, new people, new appreciations for home.

At the end of my life I want to look back and remember two things.  Time spent with my family and friends, and the times discovering new places and adventures.

Alright, vacation number two justified! Can’t wait to reveal where it is.  Hint…it’s on this list.

Ten Memorable Moments from 2013

I can’t believe 2013 is coming to an end!  My dad has always said the older you get the quicker time passes.  It’s a little bit scary, which is why I try to remind myself every single day to live in the present and not to rush things.  Kind of fitting that this was the fortune I got from Yoga this weekend.

There is more to life than increasing it’s speed – Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi Quote

2013 was a whirl wind of a year for me.  I moved out of Boston, changed careers, went on vacations, jumped out of a plane again, and had many “firsts” in my relationship.  It was definitely a year I will look back at and think to myself, yup that was a pretty monumental one.

Here are my Ten Memorable Moments from 2013

Skiing in Maine

I absolutely love the atmosphere and vibe of a cozy ski weekend away. In February my friend Maura invited Andy , me, my best friend, and her boyfriend up to her lake house in Maine.  We had the perfect weekend of skiing (Andy’s first time!), Maine lobster, and wine and games around the fire.

The Boston Marathon

When I think back to this day it still seems so surreal.  If you live in Boston, Marathon Monday is one that is always celebrated.  We have had a tradition for the past few years that includes going to the Red Sox game in the morning and then watching the end of the marathon in Kenmore Square.  This year we got up on the Green Monster!  It was right before I was moving away and was turning out to be the perfect Marathon Monday.  Then we started hearing the chatter that there were “car bombs” at the finish line.  It was one of the scariest moments of my life.  I could write a whole post on this…but I will just say that witnessing a city go through what Boston did on April 15th, 2013 makes you see things differently.  I never witnessed a city come together the way Boston did that week.  Boston Strong!

Cancun

This was mine and Andy’s first vacation together.  We went to Cancun for my birthday weekend which is also Cinco de Mayo.  It was the perfect relaxing beach vacation.  My favorite part was our trip to Isla Mujeres and swimming with dolphins!  You can also read my re-cap.

Moving from Boston back to Connecticut

This was definitely a bittersweet moment this year.  I lived in Boston for four years after college, I “grew up” in Boston, and will always have a special place for this city.  I knew it was time to be closer to my family, friends, and Andy and start a new chapter.  Although Connecticut is home I will always miss certain things about Boston!

Skydiving in Newport, Rhode Island

I had been skydiving before in Maine with my best friend but decided to buy this for Andy for his birthday.  It was an awesome weekend full of lounging on the beach, great food, and jumping out of the smallest place I have ever seen with the best view I will ever get of Newport! I wrote a re-cap a few weeks ago too about why you should go sky-diving too!

I Started this Blog!

I can’t believe I’ve been blogging for four months!  I’ve tried to start blogs before but never stuck with it.  I guess I was ready this time!  I’ve really enjoyed blogging even though I wish I had more time to dedicate towards it.  With that said I really hope to make some major improvements to it in 2014!

I nailed a head stand away from the wall!

A year ago I definitely need to be against a wall.  Now I can hold it for almost a minute!

I can get up into a handstand!

Although I still need a wall, this was a huge accomplishment.  I used to try to do kick ups in yoga class and thought I would never get up there.  I have a lot of work to do in terms of straightening my banana back and not using the wall.  But it’s a start!

Ta-da!

San Francisco!

Andy and I took a trip to San Francisco in September.  Although, I had already been here before I absolutely loved this trip.  San Fran is definitely one of my favorite cities.  It has everything I love…views, good food, and wine country!

Making the decision to go to Yoga Teacher Training

Yes, I have decided to embark on a new journey and attend yoga teacher training.  It’s been something I’ve thought about for a while now and well….I’m not getting any younger am I?! I am so excited for this journey (and a little nervous too).  I start in January so stay tuned!

Take Me Back Tuesday – Newport, Rhode Island

I haven’t written a Take Me Back Tuesday post in quite a bit.  I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve run out of places to write about or that writing about places I’ve been makes me miss traveling….yup I think it’s the latter.

This week I decided to tell you about Newport, Rhode Island, one of my favorite weekend getaways in both the summer and winter.  Newport is the perfect little nautical town that has something for everyone.  Fantastic restaurants with beautiful ocean backdrops, fun outdoor bars, gorgeous sightseeing, a bit of history, and even some fun adventurous activities!

My Newport Favorites

Place to Stay

Rheas Inn: My family has been staying here for years.  The owners are super accommodating and friendly.  Rhea’s is set right across from the beach and is a 5 minute cab ride from downtown.  It’s a cozy place with about a dozen rooms and a common area that is stocked for a full continental breakfast (or late night snack).

Newport Beach Hotel & Suites:  If you are willing to spend a little more money, this place is really nice.  I stayed here for my sister’s wedding and had the suite.  It was definitely a 4-5 star experience.

Beach

Easton’s Beach:  Often referred to as “First Beach” this area is right across from the above two hotels.  It gets pretty crowded in the summer, but that’s to be expected.  If you plop your chair in front of the Atlantic Beach Club you can expect some music and college kids enjoying being college kids.

Restaurants

Midtown Oyster Bar: This restaurant was new this past summer.  Me and Andy loved it.  It had great food and a roof deck!

Red Parrot:  I think my family goes here every single time they visit Newport (and that’s at least a couple of times a year).  It’s kind of a Newport staple right in the middle of Lower and Upper Thames.

Brick Alley Pub:  Another staple restaurant on Thames street.  They have a great salad bar!

The Landing:  If you want a water view, this is a great option.  We weren’t blown away by the food or service but the view is worth it!

Things To Do

Thames Street:  You can go to Newport and spend the entire day walking up and down Lower and Upper Thames Streets.  They are the cutest cobblestone streets with a ton of great small boutiques, souvenir shops, and of course great restaurants.

Concerts at The Newport Yachting Center:  This is a great small and intimate venue to go see a band.  It’s right downtown and has some great shows.  A fun way to start or end your night.

Cliff Walk:  I absolutely love going for a run or walk on Cliff Walk….I can’t believe I don’t have pictures from it!  Just take my word and go.

Ocean Avenue:  Take a drive on Ocean Avenue if you want to play the game “How much do you think that house is worth?” or “Which one would you buy?”.  The houses on Ocean Avenue are unreal.  A bit different from the old money mansions down the street, these are modern-day million/billionaire’s summer homes set right on the ocean.

Mansions:  I actually haven’t toured the mansions since I was younger but it’s definitely a must – do!  There is so much history and of course a lot to see!  If you want to go when the crowds aren’t there, go during Christmas.  They decorate a few of them for the holidays and they aren’t too busy!

Skydive Newport:  Andy and I went to Newport this past summer just for the skydiving.  It was absolutely awesome!
