Why I Love Practicing Yoga to Music

The first time I ever stepped my ten toes on to a yoga mat was during a Hip Hop Yoga class in Boston.  A friend had asked me if I’d like to join her and I couldn’t resist.  I grew up a dancer and well always heard yoga was “good for you.”

One hour and 15 minutes later I was hooked and never looked back.  People used to ask me, ‘Hip Hop Yoga? Isn’t that an oxymoron? Are you dancing on your yoga mat?’  Not exactly.  Hip Hop Yoga was (and still is) a 75 minute vinyasa class set to loud, hip hop music.  Bostonians used to flock to these classes to set up their mats inches from the next yogi, sweat and flow to the music.DJ

For me, it was the time in my day that I was able to just be with myself and tune the rest of my daily stresses out.  I was working a 9 to 5 job, living paycheck to paycheck, and trying to find my way in the world.  If my early 20’s were a roller coaster ride, Hip Hop Yoga was my harness, keeping me from flying out of my seat.  Continue reading

My Current Yoga Playlist

Happy Snow Day, again!  I can just maybe get used to this!  Snowy, cozy, and spending time with my two favorite boys?  I’ll take it.

I had such a peaceful morning.  I couldn’t sleep so I woke up early and did an at home yoga practice.  Typically when I do this I lead myself through a practice which helps me create new sequences for teaching, so a win win. But this morning I really just wanted to be “led” by someone else.

Have you ever heard of Codyapp?  It’s a website that offers videos from fitness professionals or yoga teachers.  I saw that Meghan Currie was one of their teachers.  I have heard great things about her, so decided to check it out!  I purchased her Strength Intelligence series and loved it.  She talked a lot about finding the balance between strength and ease in yoga and in life.  Yes, I like her!

A Winter Day in Boston

Well hello there lovies!  Apparently it takes a full blown blizzard to allow me to blog now a days!  It’s been 12 days since my last post (am I in confession?).  Between work, teaching yoga, practicing yoga, having a puppy child, and now planning a wedding, I am slacking on the blog, and it makes me sad.

But now I have no excuse because here in Connecticut we are slowly but surely cozying up and preparing to be home bound for at least 36 hours as this blizzard they are calling Juno approaches.  So I am hunkering down, and writing!

Last week I took advantage of having weekdays off and a best friend who was in between jobs.  I made a very quick trip to Boston and it was perfect! I haven’t been up there for a visit in way too long and was very over due.

My best friend still lives in our apartment that we were in for 3 years in Brookline.  It’s sort of like a trip down memory lane and always bittersweet.

The night I got there, Rachel made me a yummy dinner and we spent lots of time catching up.  So much, that I have no pictures to show for it.  But the next day I have plenty!

We started our day for a 90 minute yoga class with my favorite (and one of my first ever) yoga teacher at Back Bay Yoga.  It was awesome being back there.

We then headed towards Newbury Street where I got a Vanilla Ginger Almond Milk Latte from Thinking Cup. Yum!!
