Yoga Teacher Training – Making The Decision

Well I am officially less than one week away from the first day of my yoga teacher training!  I will start this Saturday at Yogapata in Wilton, Connecticut.  I don’t think it will feel real until I’m there on Day One.

This decision has been a long time coming.  I started practicing Yoga about two and a half years ago while living in Boston.  I fell in love after my first class, and continued a steady practice ever since.  There are so many reasons why I love yoga and the impact it’s had on my life is pretty incredible.  For this reason I’ve always contemplated attending teacher training in order to share this with other people.

My contemplation would often be met with hesitation.  I would think “you’re just bored” or “why would you be a good yoga teacher” or “just because you love yoga doesn’t mean you should be a teacher” and so on for about a year.  This past summer I realized that any big decision is going to be met with these types of questions.  I finally decided, yes I am going to do this.

I figured I am not getting any younger, right?  If this is something I have been thinking about for this long then why the heck not?!  What do I have to lose (besides a lot of money I guess)?  But all kidding aside you will never know if something is right for you unless you try it.  So I did my research and due diligence and found a place that I think it going to be perfect for me.  I can’t wait to share my journey!

Things to Think About When Choosing a Yoga Teacher Training:

Location:  Close or far?  Destination or at home?  I thought about going to some exotic place at first. Then I thought about going to Boston to my favorite studio.  I finally decided that if I could find a training close to home, then it would make experience more manageable.  I didn’t want to burn myself out by driving two hours every weekend.  I also felt that staying close to home would help integrate teacher training in to my everyday life.

Length:  There are intensive programs, usually a month, or extended programs over the course of several months.  I contemplated doing a month intensive to get it done quickly.  After really thinking about it and asking some advice I decided an extended program would be better for me.  This will be a completely new experience for me and I want time to be able to digest it.

Teachers:  I really wanted to take my teacher training with teachers who I knew well.  This is what prompted me to check out Boston.  Once I realized I didn’t want to travel for the training I made sure to try out a few different studios in Connecticut.  I have been at my studio for a few months now where I will take the training.  I know that they are amazing teachers, have taught hundreds of other yoga teachers, and I enjoy their style.  Sold!

Size:  I guess this is like any other type of class or schooling.  If you learn well in bigger groups then that is great.  If you prefer a smaller class size then find that for yoga teacher training.  I am glad that my training will be a pretty small group (not exactly sure yet but will report back!)

Why You Should Go Skydiving!

As 2013 comes to a close I’ve started reflecting on this past year…what I’ve crossed off the bucket list, and what I want to add for next year.  A big highlight this year was going Skydiving for the second time!  Do you know why you should go skydiving!? Let me tell you…

The adrenaline…it starts when you arrive, builds in the plane ride up, and peaks at the very moment that you are standing on the edge of the plane about to jump 10,000 feet into thin air.

To step out of your comfort zone...you learn something about yourself every time you do.  You surprise yourself, you grow, you appreciate being you.

Get some fresh air…when else can you breathe in air 10,000 feet in the sky?  It’s probably the freshest air you’re going to get!  And believe me you get A LOT of it.

For the pictures…duh!  Do you realize how silly people look in skydiving pictures?  But no one cares…because you have a picture of yourself FLYING!  I’m pretty sure that makes you cool.

For the view...this is what made me want to go a second time, and would get me to go a third or fourth.  How cool is it to fly over beautiful places, or different landscapes?  When I went in Maine we saw beautiful foliage and a glimpse of Lake Winnipesaukee.  When I went in Newport, Rhode Island we were over the water and were able to see every little island, bridge, and inlet.  Both were awesome!

To share an amazing experience with someone else…I’ve gone with my best friend and the love of my life.  What’s better than sharing a once and a life time experience with the people you love?

The pictures in the red jump-suit are taken at Skydive New England in Lebanon, Maine.

The pictures with no jump-suit are taken at Skydive Newport in Newport, Rhode Island.

I recommend both places!  Have you gone skydiving?  What do you love about it?

Five Reasons Why I Love Yoga

As I am coming up on my two-year yoga-versary, it’s nice to look back and realize what got me hooked after that very first class.  I started practicing yoga at a time when I was a little bit lost.  I had recently gone through a tough break-up and wasn’t sure about the future of my current job.  Now looking back I realize it was just a big drop on the 20’s roller coaster ride.  Discovering yoga has really helped me navigate through these crazy years of ups and downs.  It is so much more than the physical practice for me.  It centers me and grounds me and has really changed my perspective on a whole bunch of things.  These are just some reasons why I love getting my down-dog on!

It forces you to dedicate a portion of your day to focus only on your body, your breath, and moving to connect the two.  Any worry, stress, anxiety, excitement, anticipation, goes out the door when you step on your mat.

No shoes required.  Simple but I love that you practice barefoot.

It builds amazing strength and helps your body reach its full potential.  Almost every class I learn that my body could do something I never thought it could.

You can laugh at yourself.  No matter how much you practice no one is ever going to get into every pose perfectly.  Every body is different and that’s okay.  Because if you fall over or on your face, you can laugh!

Yoga has taught me to live in the present.  You can’t change the past and you can’t control the future.  Take every moment for what it is.  Find the joy when you nail that pose and accept when you fall down because you can always get back up.  And that can be translated to all aspects in your life.

Oh and one more….
