Yoga Teacher Training – Weekend Seven

Happy Thursday friends! I procrastinated a bit with my Yoga Teacher Training post and re-cap this week. I had a ton on my to-do list and so it got pushed off until now, sitting on the plane to Belize!!

Last weekend was yet another beautiful one, shared with my fellow teacher trainees, my Yogaversity family. This weekend was a bit different though. This weekend we were introduced to Bhakti Yoga and Kirtan.

We had the privilege to be led all weekend by Sean Johnson and The Wild Lotus Band. Sean Johnson is a Bhakti Yoga teacher from New Orleans, LA. He owns his own studio down there and travels the country with his band singing Kirtan at music festivals and yoga studios. They actually just played Jazz Fest and were even voted top 4 bands to see along with Phish, Robert Plant, and Robin Thicke!

So you are probably thinking, ‘What the heck is Bhakti Yoga?” Bhakti Yoga is often referred to as the yoga of love. Sign me up right?

To give a little more insight I will quote Sean Johnson himself because his explanation is much more beautiful than mine could ever be: “I think many of us can relate to the joy of falling in love, and perhaps to the shattering experience of having our heart broken, and the longing to fall in love again. Bhakti yoga is about channeling this kind of an emotional experience into a love affair with Life itself.”

Being Grateful For Being Busy

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Cinco de Mayo is one of my favorite holidays. Not because I like tequila or Corona but because it’s my birthday too!

I have a CRAZY month coming up. At first, the thought of everything I have to do in May made me a little anxious. How am I ever going to find the time to get all of this done?! There are not ever enough hours in the day, right?  Why am I so BUSY!?

But then I decided to take control of my thoughts, because hey we have the capability to do so. Instead of being stressed, why not look at everything I have going on in my life and be truly appreciative and grateful?  I am going to start being grateful for being busy. Continue reading

Yoga Teacher Training – Weekend Six

We are officially more than half way through our Yoga Teacher Training!  I can’t believe it! You always know when you go into something like this that it will probably fly by, but then when it does, ah! I wish I could freeze time or at least just slow it down during our training weekends.

This past weekend was sort of a new chapter for myself and my Yogaversity family.  We began our second half of the training “Descend into the Heart of Others.”  We dove head first into TEACHING!

Mitchel and Tracy shared with us their process going into a class.  We went through the three major focuses of a yoga class; creating inspiration, having clear direction. and creating a meaningful and thought provoking class, ultimately leading to a transformational experience for your students.

  • We learned about sequencing and how to put together a healthy class where the student is ready and prepared for each pose.
  • We learned about adjustments and how to put students in proper alignment in some basic poses.
  • We learned about effective communication, a significant part of teaching yoga!  Ironically, this is probably what is most uncomfortable for me.  Learning to use my words and my voice in a clear, confident, and concise way in order to deliver a good class is going to take me way out of my comfort zone.
