A Weekend in The Life of the 21 Day Sugar Detox

Alright, I know it’s Monday which means this past weekend is already been there, done that…but I really wanted to write about my first weekend on the 21 Day Sugar Detox.

You see for me the weekend is usually my time to let go and indulge a bit.  This can look like having some sweet potato fries at my favorite barbecue restaurant with a few craft beers and even having a bite of the corn bread. Or going to my favorite tapas restaurant and enjoying a glass bottle of wine and devouring a whole cheese board.

So when Friday rolled around and my stressful day at work came to an end I was really, really looking forward to a nice dinner and some wine.  But then I remembered…21 Day Sugar Detox Kelsey! No wine, no cheese, no ketchup, no fries!  I got a little anxious as I drove to Andy’s and wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to hold out.  I even thought about……cheating.

BUT I am very proud to say that I did good the entire weekend!  Even being around lots of alcohol and bad food and I stayed on track!  We can do this people!  Here is how my weekend went:

Friday

We went to whole foods and picked  up dinner. Shrimp as an appetizer.  I forgot I couldn’t have cocktail sauce so decided to try it with lemon.  To my surprise I loved it!

For dinner we had short rib steaks with some roasted broccoli.  Thank goodness we had a great rub for the steak so I didn’t miss the ketchup too much.

Saturday

I started my morning with a nice sweaty vinyasa class.  It was so foggy on my drive home I had to snap a picture.  This weather was making me feel a little down in the dumps all day.

I cheered up a little bit when I got back to Andy’s and we made some yummy omelets.  I love this sign I got Andy for Christmas.  I told him I know it was his favorite gift!

Then we headed out to do some shopping.  This is when things got REALLY good.  I figured out that I could use my $200 Athleta gift card at Old Navy.  What this means is that instead of getting one pair of yoga pants and two tank tops at Athleta I got FIFTEEN pieces of clothing from Old Navy!! While I love Athleta, Old Navy has great yoga / workout clothes, so how could I go wrong?

I bought 4 pairs of pants, 6 tank tops, 3 sports bras, and one long sleeve zip up.  Yoga Teacher Training here I come!

After my shopping spree it was football time….boo.  I’m not a huge football fan, and Andy….well he is.  Since he dealt with my moodiness up until Saturday I thought I should probably be nice and go watch the games with him and some friends.

Eating and drinking at a sports bar while on the 21 Day Sugar Detox.

I wish I took pictures because it was pretty funny.  Over the course of about 5 hours I had the following:

  • 3 or 4 club sodas with lime
  • 3 buffalo wings (no blue cheese)
  • celery sticks dipped in guacamole
  • burger with bacon, mushrooms, and onions (no bun or ketchup)

Sunday

Sunday was a pretty lazy day but we did do something super exciting.  We made homemade beef jerky!  I followed the recipe from the 21 Day Sugar Detox book and they came out awesome!  It made for a great snack at work today.

I also tried Kombucha for the first time this weekend.  I had no idea what it was before this detox.  To my surprise, I really liked it.  Actually, that’s a lie.  I like pretty much everything.  This was ginger flavored.  I wasn’t expecting it to be fizzy but loved it!

We left the house for a few hours to go see Lone Survivor.  It was a great movie, but of course a tear jerker.  I’ve been SO emotional at movies lately…to the point that I am crying for 5 minutes after we leave the theatre.  Is that normal?

We ended our weekend with an awesome dinner.  Introducing Bacon Wrapped Mini Meatloaves.  This is a really simple recipe. photo 2 (3)

  • 1.5 – 2 lbs grass fed beef
  • 1 egg
  • spice to your liking

Mix your beef together and form meatballs.  Take a muffin pan and line each muffin with a half slice of bacon.  Place the meatballs in the muffin pans and bake on 375 for 25 – 30 minutes.

All in all it was a great weekend and I feel great!  I think I’m starting to get the hang of this 21 Day Sugar Detox thing.  How do you handle going out and not drinking or eating bad?

New Year, New Recipes – Bacon Broccoli Frittata

Happy New Year!  I can’t believe it is two thousand and FOURTEEN!  That just seems crazy to me because it makes me feel like I am getting old.  I remember one of my first New Years Eve’s spent with friends was in 7th grade for Y2K.  Remember that? Y2K, when everyone thought the world might end.

So I’ve always been all about setting goals for the New Year.  Ya know, starting the first day of the year refreshed, motivated, empowered and all of that.  Well this year I am delaying this whole process a few days.  I am going to spend the weekend home, with some time to myself, getting things sorted, and detoxing a bit.  And while I am excited to do this I almost feel guilty that I didn’t have all of these feelings and motivation on January 1st.  That’s silly right?

One thing I did do on January 1st was buy a new cook book (I’ll post about that later).  So being inspired by lots of different recipes I decided to come up with my own!  As you know I typically eat my go-to omelet for dinner 3-4 nights a week. Well….I decided it’s a New Year, so new recipes are a must.  Yes I only, changed two ingredients and the way it’s cooked but it still counts.

Bacon Broccoli Frittata

**Disclaimer: This recipe is one of those, do what feels right, in terms of measurements.

Ingredients

  • 3-4 Slices of Bacon
  • 1/2 Yellow Onion
  • 3-4 Broccoli Crowns Chopped into Florets (the way they come in the store with an elastic around the stalks)
  • 8 Eggs (whisked)
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Garlic Powder

Pre-heat your oven to 375 degrees.  Once your broccoli is cut up, steam it so they are cooked and soft.  I did this in the microwave by adding 3 tablespoons of water and broccoli to a covered bowl.  I microwaved them for 2 minutes and they came out perfect.

While the broccoli is in the microwave start cooking your bacon in a pan over medium heat for about 7-8 minutes.  When the bacon is cooked to your liking remove from the pan.  Add your chopped onion to the pan with the bacon fat.  Saute the onions until they become clear about 3- 5 minutes.  Add the broccoli to the pan and turn the burner to low and mix around.

While the broccoli and onions are over low heat, beat your 8 eggs in a bowl and cut your cooked bacon into smaller pieces.  Add half the eggs to an oiled pan, then add the broccoli and onions.  Finally, add the rest of the eggs and bacon on top.  Cook in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until frittata is firm.

I think I need to work on making my recipe instructions less wordy!  Any suggestions or tips?

Twas’ The Weekend Before Christmas…

Happy Monday!  I have today AND tomorrow off so I am super excited.  It’s so nice having weekdays off, I feel like you get so much more done.

This weekend before Christmas was a good one.  It was relaxing, fun, and productive!  What else can you ask for?

Friday, I stayed home at my apartment and decided to take it easy.  I packed for the weekend (Andy lives about a half hour away and my family an hour), wrapped presents, and had a healthy delicious meal.

My go – to Spinach, Mushroom, and Bacon omelet with broccoli and avocado on the side.

This was perfect because I woke up nice and refreshed on Saturday morning ready for 8:30AM yoga!  I love Saturday morning yoga.  When I got to Andy’s I decided I wasn’t done with it yet so was playing around with my headstands and handstands.

Saturday night we had plans to go to a friend’s house for a Christmas / Birthday gathering.  I decided to bring an appetizer and settled on Deviled Eggs with Bacon.  I followed George from the Civilized Caveman’s recipe.  I added about a tablespoon of organic mayo because my filling looked a little dry.

They were a huge hit at the party which was a relief because it was my first time making them.  Everyone was so intrigued that there was avocado and bacon….success!

Sunday was filled with napping, seeing both of our families for a little, some late night shopping, and more present wrapping.  Last minute shopping included Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, CVS, and some restaurants for gift cards.
