Staying Healthy When Life Happens

I’ve had a tough week.  We all have those weeks, when life just happens.  We all know that routines are comforting, they help you stay on track and stick to the plan, which ultimately is the first step to a healthy lifestyle.  Unfortunately, life throws you some curveballs every once in a while.

Maybe you got some bad news at work, your child is sick, you had a fight with your loved one, or you lost someone close to you.  Whatever it is, things happen that can affect our state of mind, which in turn will affect our physical state.

Here are some tips on staying healthy when life happens:

Control the controllables.  If you’re taken away from your gym or yoga studio or regular place of exercise, use your two legs and get up and move.  Even if it’s just for 15 minutes.  That’s why I love running and yoga.  You can do it anywhere!  Any type of physical activity releases endorphins which naturally makes you feel better.

Snack often.  Don’t starve yourself if healthy foods are not around.  You will end up pigging out on all the bad stuff that is available.  Try to grab some on the go healthy snacks that will fuel your body.

Wake up early.  Early mornings are the best time to get some physical activity in when you don’t have the time.  Get up 30 minutes before everyone else and go for a jog, take a walk, or do some sit ups in your bedroom.  I found a great website that emails you an exercise every day that requires only YOU.  No props, gyms, or machines are needed.  It’s called Bodeefit.

Stay hydrated.  I literally never leave the house without my Camelbak water bottle.  I call it my “adult bottle.”  People might think it’s weird but I don’t mind.  Staying hydrated is huge when your body is run down emotionally or physically.  If you don’t drink enough water your mind will trick you into thinking you need something else when in reality you just need some H2o!

Realize no one is perfect.  There is not a human being out there who eats perfectly all the time or exercises consistently 365 days a year.  It’s okay to let go, get off track, or indulge.  It might seem like you are being unhealthy, but you know what…sometimes it’s healthy for the soul. The best thing about straying off your routine is you can turn around and get right back on track in the blink of an eye because it’s something YOU control.

Five Primal Snacks

A lot of people who start eating a primal or paleo diet will complain that they don’t know what to snack on during the day.  I’m guilty of it myself, especially when I first started eating primal.  Working a 9 to 5 job doesn’t always make it easy either but the key is (as always) to plan your lunches every week and have your snacks prepared.  This prevents running to the office snack closet and grabbing a bag of chips or cookies!

A rule I’ve followed over the past couple of years is pretty simple…snack on real foods or products.  Ones that you can actually read the entire ingredient list.  Here are five primal snacks that keep me going through the day!

Cottage Cheese with Fruit and Nuts

I promise I don’t eat the whole container. Just one serving 🙂

Kind Bars

They have a ton of different ones but my recent favorite is this Cashew & Ginger Spice flavor.  I love Kind Bars because if you look at the ingredient list you will recognize each one.  It’s one of the best bars I’ve found with nothing processed.

Dark Chocolate & Blueberries

I think I am officially addicted to dark chocolate.  Even if it’s just the tiniest piece I usually have a bite every night.  I usually stick to at least 80% cacao.

Avocado

If you get one just the perfect ripeness, avocados are an awesome snack just on their own!

Justin’s Honey Almond Butter with an Apple or Banana

I just recently discovered Justin’s brand and absolutely love it.  It is so tasty but yet so good for you.  Here are the ingredients: Dry Roasted Almonds, Honey Powder (Sugar, Honey), Organic Palm Fruit Oil, Sea Salt.  Honey is my favorite flavor so far and it only has 3 grams of sugar!  Throw a tablespoon of this on an apple of banana and you have yourself a tasty, healthy, and real snack.

How I Started A Blog

It’s been almost two months since I started The Primal Yogi so I thought I’d write about my progress so far and how I started a blog.

Why Did I Decide to Start a Blog?

I’ve always loved reading blogs especially food blogs, travel blogs, and just all around healthy living blogs.  It started with discovering Carrots n’ Cake and Adventurous Kate.  I started reading theirs about three years ago and it’s been really cool to see how far they’ve come since then.

I’ve always loved writing, even though I don’t think I realized it until recently.  Whenever I’ve traveled for long periods of time I would write a journal. In 2011 I started Yelping and to date have over 150 reviews.  So I recently realized I guess I like to write! Whether it be for myself or to share thoughts with others.

I have a lot of thoughts that run through my brain on a daily basis so I think writing is almost therapeutic for me….just to get it out!

Steps to Start This Blog

  • Decide what to write about.  It’s pretty easy to write about things you love so I decided this blog would be focused on healthy living and travel.
  • Pick a name. That’s a tough one.  You want something relevant to what you will write about and continue to write about, something that would make other’s want to read your blog, and make sure it’s not taken!
  • Set up a WordPress account. Buy your domain name.  If I hadn’t bought my domain name my address would be theprimalyogi.wordpress.com.
  • Start writing!  I’ve been trying to be consistent writing about three posts a week.  I’ve had the same theme every Tuesday, except this Tuesday ironically.

Steps to Grow Your Blog & Gain Readers

  • I’ve taken a bunch of tips from Tina at Carrot’s n Cake and Anne at fannetasticfood.com
  • I registered my blog on Foodie Blogroll.  They feature all different food blogs daily on their site, have contests and promotions you can participate in, and give you a widget for your blog (look to the right)
  • I signed up for Bloglovin.  This is an awesome site I just discovered.  You can search for ANY blog on their site and ‘Follow’ it.  It then takes all of the blogs you follow and puts them on your homepage as sort of “news-feed.” Once you claim your own Blog you can get a widget for your readers to click and ‘Follow” your blog (look to the right).  They even have an app which brings all of your favorite blogs to your fingertips!
